The steamy tropical jungles of Borneo and the exotic Asian hawker stalls of Kuching are an unlikely place to find New Zealand consultants. However, it was there in the Malaysian state of Sarawak that Guinness Gallagher, together with the New Zealand Forest Research Institute, undertook the corporatisation of the Sarawak State Forest department. With an annual income of over US$500 million, the restructuring and transfer of the former department into a new corporate body was an ambitious task undertaken over a number of years by a small team of advisers led by Shaan Stevens of Guinness Gallagher. The project involved Shaan spending extended periods in the jungles of Borneo from which, if his stories are to be believed, he was lucky to escape with his life.

Guinness Gallagher's success in this venture demonstrates again how the corporatisation expertise built up in New Zealand is of a truly international quality.
