Guinness Gallagher personnel recently found themselves on the icy cold steppes of Mongolia, preparing a strategic plan for the privatisation of the Mongolian Coal Agency. This is an ongoing assignment funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in conjunction with the Mongolian Ministry of Infrastructure. The assignment involved Guinness Gallagher reviewing the Mongolian mining operations to capture the benefits of efficiency and effectiveness, and assisting the State Agency to develop a strategic business plan as a precursor to privatisation. Guinness Gallagher found that by simply adopting good mining practices, the Mongolian Coal Agency could significantly improve the quality and reduce the cost of their coal

Guinness Gallagher demonstrated in this project that it is essential to get the basics right before embarking upon expensive capital programmes, such as modernising plant and equipment. Our hands-on skills in mining and institutional re-strengthening worked as well in Mongolia as they do at home in New Zealand.
